The best time to visit Halong is in warmer weather, from April to October, as you can swim off the boat and relax on sundecks. During the peak typhoon season in September, boats may cancel due to bad weather. Between January and March, the weather can be cool and drizzly, but even then, Halong Bay is a worthwhile excursion. It is important to note the weather before setting out as rough seas have led to serious accidents. Cat Ba Island and National Park

The Cat Ba Archipelago consists of 366 islets and islands peppered with beautiful beaches and grottoes. Cat Ba, overlooking the Gulf of Tonkin, is the island’s main settlement and port. Scattered along the coast are a number of floating fishing villages. The retreat consists of an 85-year-old stilt house, which was transported to its current location from a small village 150 kilometres northeast of Sapa, a H’mong family house, also relocated and reconstructed, and five rammed-earth bungalows. Guest accommodation is in either the bungalows or the H’mong house, which contains two bedrooms and a living area. The bungalows are about as basic as it gets in terms of furnishings, containing a mattress with bedding, a mosquito net, a heater, a lamp and a small table. But put aside any visions of budget beach huts or $4 a night shacks — one in Don Dhet springs to mind — because these are as classy as a rammed earth bungalow can be: the bedding is excellent quality cotton, with thick duvets perfect for chilly Sapa nights, towels are white and fluffy, a tastefully designed lamp sits in the corner and fruit and bottled water are supplied. There’s even a knife to cut the fruit with, although I wondered momentarily whether it was for attacking any creepy crawlies that wandered in. H’mong Mountain Retreat

The highlight of the rooms are the terraces, which extend out over the rice fields providing near uninterrupted views of the valley below. You’ll have to sit on the floor, as no seating is provided, but you’ll soon forget about that as you enjoy the scenery with a cold can of beer.

The H’mong House is a good alternative for groups or families. Constructed from a mixture of clay walls, palm leaf thatching and palm tree wood flooring, it houses up to four people in two bedrooms. The rooms are bigger than the bungalows but otherwise the same style. It doesn’t feel quite as adventurous as the bungalows but still has great views.

One important thing to note is that neither the bungalows nor the H’mong House have en suite bathrooms. The two modern bathrooms are located in the main stilt house, thereby necessitating a few minutes’ walk along a narrow stoney path between rice fields from your room. Not such an issue during the day when it’s dry, but not the most pleasant experience on a rainy night. Fortunately, lamps are provided.

Meals are taken in the main stilt house, which is also a great place to chill out with a book or play cards — either on the ground floor, with better views, or the upper floor. The furnishings are stunning, created from local materials and designed by co-owner Dinh Khac Tiep, and for chilly days and nights a large coal fire can be lit. Cookery classes are held in the main house — I’ve taken a few cookery classes around Asia and this has to have the best view and the food’s great too (ed’s note: I’ll put it up at number one with Bali Asli in Bali then!).

Dinner is a set vegetarian menu, which may not be to everyone’s taste and although plentiful and warming doesn’t quite hit the spot after a day of trekking. It also adds another US$15 per person to the bill, including a drink, but it’s tasty and there’s not a lot of choice unless you want to trek back into Sapa. Additional drinks are available at reasonable prices.

I may have referenced $4 huts earlier, but it’s not only the quality of the bungalows that bear no resemblance — the prices don’t either. At US$59 per night for a bungalow, including breakfast, this is not budget. You are, however, getting not just a room but an experience as well.

H’mong Mountain Retreat is part of the Tet Lifestyle Collection, a company that takes its responsibility to the local communities in which it operates seriously, with all of its staff either underprivileged youth or ethnic minorities. It also works closely with the local communities to promote the increase of ethnic minority living standards in education and basic health care and a percentage of profits go towards the Mac Ha School.

Treks and other activities can be organised or you can set out yourself from the retreat for a walk down into the valley. Transfers from Sapa town are provided but if you want to travel back and forth you’ll either need to rent a bike or pay extra.

H’mong Mountain Retreat will suit those looking to get away from it all and spend some quality time with friends or a good book in a unique location, or exploring the local area. It’s not ideal if you want to spend your evenings shopping or boozing in Sapa town, or place an en suite bathroom high on your list of requirements.

There's really not a lot in Rach Gia itself that draws visitors -- if you're in Rach Gia, you're most likely heading offshore to Phu Quoc Island, or westward to Hon Chong and Ha Tien. However, if you miss the last boat to Phu Quoc, you may find yourself needing an overnight stay. That's not a terrible situation -- the town has a couple of minor points of interest, a few good hotels, and a handful of tasty places to get your rice. With that said, if you're in town, your main concern will likely be how to get to Phu Quoc. The cheapest option is to take a ferry. In the high season, several companies have ferries leaving throughout the day. In wet season, the timetables can be haphazard due to bad weather and the boats often do not run. Because of this people often fly -- either from Saigon or Rach Gia.

Even though there are multiple daily flights, they fill up quickly, so if you arrive in Rach Gia and the weather is foul, book yourself on a flight quicksmart -- the flight is only 100,000 VND more than the boat.Likewise, leaving Phu Quoc by boat can be a little difficult in the wet , but flights almost always run, so if you're tight on time and have wedged Phu Quoc into the last few days of a Vietnam trip, consider flying back to Saigon to be sure of not missing onwards connections. Though Rach Gia is a fairly large and sprawling town, most hotels, restaurants and sights are located within a concentrated area on an island in the middle of the Cai Lon River. Rach Gia Park sits roughly in the middle of the island, its northern border pressed against the riverside. Most hotels and restaurants are clustered between the west of the park and Tran Phu St. Tran Phu continues over the river, where it leads to Rach Gia's central bus station. SONG XANH CRUISE

A small bridge leads from Rach Gia Park across the river. Just on the other side, you'll find the local police station, and a VietCom bank with an ATM and exchange service. The pier for speedboats to Phu Quoc is also located on this side of the river, around 400m east of the bank.

Hon Chong Peninsula

30km south of Ha Tien is the Hon Chong Peninsula. A line of isles and islets has earned the peninsula the title ‘mini-Ha Long’. The peninsula attracts both local and foreign travelers because of the many coastal resorts lining its shores. Once you approach the peninsula, you will be bombarded with images of cement factories breathing out smoke. Hon Chong has yet to suffer any environmental damage as a result of the cement factories, the presence of the factories detracts from the image of the peninsula. Hon Chong’s placid waters and beaches lined with casuarinas and palms are among the most beautiful in the Mekong Delta cruise, but these sights and landscapes fail to measure with the beaches found on Phu Quoc.

The vegetation and landscape are unlike the rest of the Mekong, which gives the area a different aura. Phu Quoc’s isolation made it the perfect hiding place for two prominent figures in Vietnamese history. Hon Chong Peninsula

Like Mui Ne, Phu Quoc is a favorite destination for expats living in Ho Chi Minh City. Despite the fast development of bars, resorts, and paved roads on the island, Phu Quoc still provides visitors with a pioneer experience. Most destinations can only be accessed through dirts roads and beaches are mostly free of hawkers. During the rainy months from May to October, Phu Quoc is quiet and room rates are negotiable, but during the peak months of December to January, prices for accommodation increase and advance booking may be necessary.
